چکیده

This study presents an application of biofeedback in balance training, in particular an audiovisual balance rehabilitation system designed for training of the elderly. Motivated by the need to provide portable, cost-effective and accessible training devices, the system implements a MEMS accelerometer to quantify the balance board movements during a balancing task and use them to provide a real-time, synchronous audio-visual biofeedback. The visual feedback displays the offset and the overall performance of the balance board. The audio feedback is based on the sound localization cues that indicate the direction of the balance board movements using stereo sound. Initial results indicate a significant improvement in the postural stability when the audio-visual biofeedback is provided. The pilot study found significant improvements in maintenance and recovery of dynamic balance manifested through decreased variability of complex, lateral and front-to-back movements during a balancing task.

Effects of Visual Biofeedback Therapy on Postural Balance of Stroke Patients

Purpose: Postural balance deficit is one of the common post-stroke disabilities. Providing visual biofeedback while balance activities are performed is a way to improve postural balance disorders following stroke. But among the research published, there is incoherency about the positive effects of visual biofeedback therapy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of usin...

Biofeedback rehabilitation of posture and weightbearing distribution in stroke: a center of foot pressure analysis.

Weight bearing on the paretic lower extremity and transfer of weight from one lower extremity to the other are important goals of stroke rehabilitation. Improvements in these limb loading and weight transfer abilities have been shown to relate to improved performance of many functional activities. Unfortunately, valid and practical clinical measures of paretic lower extremity loading and weight...

Age-related differences in efficiency of visual and vibrotactile biofeedback for balance improvement

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of visual (VF) and vibrotactile (TF) biofeedback obtained from the lower trunk (L5) tilts signal and their combination (VF+TF) in reducing postural sway in young and elderly people. METHODS: Twenty healthy elderly subjects (8 males, mean age 74 years) and 20 healthy young subjects (7 males, mean age 27 years) were tested i...

Investigating the Impact of Visual Biofeedback on Postural Control Via Informative Dynamic Balance Training in Healthy Individuals

Objective: After traumatic brain injury (TBI), postural instability often results. This can effect ambulation and, subsequently, activities of daily living. Various forms of rehabilitation have been developed, but few offer engaging activities that provide informative dynamic balance training. The goal of this pilot study was to build a goal-based system that provided visual biofeedback to crea...
